Preparation and recommendations for percutaneous kidney biopsy by ultrasound.

2. Scope and Field of Application​

Applies to all services of diagnostic imaging and medical services nationwide in which percutaneous kidney biopsy guided by ultrasound is performed.

3. Development​

The procedure consists in obtaining samples of tissue from the organ under study to send to pathology. The procedure is performed using ultrasound to guide the needle through which the tissue is obtained, which adds security to the procedure.

3.1 Preparations and Recommendations Before the Study​

Read carefully and follow these recommendations in preparation for the exam:

  • This type of study is only done in hospital institutions.
  • Do not eat or drink food or liquids during the 6 hours prior to the procedure.
  • You must carry personal implements, as you must be hospitalized 24 hours after the procedure for recovery.
  • The following medications should be discontinued if you use them: aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, or anticoagulants (such as warfarin or Coumadin) 10 days before the test; this suspension must be guided and handled by your treating doctor.
  • You must stop all homeopathic medicines such as Ginkgo biloba, fatty acids, omega 3, vitamin E or green tea.
  • If you are taking control medications for hypertension, epilepsy, diabetes (including injected insulin) or other diseases that do not require anticoagulation, you should continue taking them with water even on the day of the test.
  • You must bring the medical chart, results, and images of exams that you have previously done and that are related to the procedure.
  • Bring the results of the following laboratory tests: hemoglobin, hematocrit, PT, PTT, INR, and platelet count that have been performed in less than a month.

3.2 Recommendations During the Study​

 

  • You must attend the exam with a companion who must be a responsible adult and without limitations.
  • Must remain at rest for 24 hours for recovery.

 

3.3 Post-Study Recommendations​

 

  • After remaining in absolute bed rest for 24 hours, an ultrasound is performed to confirm the absence of renal complications.
  • At that time, you are discharged and you can lead a completely normal life. The only recommendation is to avoid physical effort for a week.
  • In the presence of fever, pain in the puncture site or presence of blood in the urine, go urgently to the nearest clinic to contact your specialist doctor.
