1. 1. Instructive’s name​

Preparation and recommendations for Abdomen and Pelvis CT or Urotomography.

2. Scope and Field of Application​

It applies to all services of diagnostic imaging and medical services nationwide in which urotomography is performed (contrast tomography of the abdomen and pelvis).

3. Development​

It is a radiological study that serves to evaluate the anatomy of the abdomen; usually, this test is performed in order to diagnose or explore the abdomen and pelvis, also to guide procedures such as biopsies.

3.1 Preparations and Recommendations Before the Study​

Read carefully and follow these recommendations in preparation for the exam:

  • Fasting is required during the 6 hours before the exam.
  • Bring the result of the creatinine test, which must have been done within the previous month if you are not an inpatient.
  • If you are pregnant or think you are pregnant, you should inform the care staff.
  • If you are taking control medications, such as high blood pressure, epilepsy and/or diabetes, you can take them with a little water, except if you are taking metformin, which should be discontinued 48 hours before your test.
  • You must attend the exam with an adult companion and without disability.
  • You must present an hour and a half before your appointment in order to prepare for the study.
  • If you have the results of previous exams related to this procedure or medical chart, you should take them on the day of the exam.

3.2 Recommendations During the Study​

 

  • On the day of the appointment, you should inform the nurse if you have allergies to food, medicines or iodinated contrast media.
  • The following metal objects must be removed to enter the examination room: jewelry, watches, pins, hair clips, metal zippers, or any other metal object.
  • You should avoid making movements while the study is being done.
  • Attend to the indications of the health personnel.
  • The preparation lasts 1 hour and a half and the exam lasts approximately 20 minutes on the equipment.

 

3.3 Post-Study Recommendations​

 

  • After the completion of the study, the patient can continue with the usual lifestyle.
