Preparation Instructions for Glucose Tolerance Curves

Read carefully and follow these recommendations in preparation for the exam:​

 

  • Fasting of 12 hours is required the day before; it is recommended to eat food maximum until 7:00 p.m.
  • Present at the clinical laboratory from 6:30 a.m.
  • Initially, the patient is taken a baseline blood sample and immediately will be administered, orally, a special solution already prepared with sugar load, called glucose load, which should be ingested completely. 
  • You must remain in the clinical laboratory for 1 to 3 hours to take the blood samples according to the length of the curve requested by your doctor. It is advisable to bring reading material with you to keep you occupied during the waiting time.
  • During this period of time, you MUST NOT EAT FOOD OR PERFORM ANY TYPE OF EXERCISE.
  • The fulfillment of these schedules is of the utmost importance for the adequate performance of this type of tests.
  • If the patient has an arterial hypertension of epilepsy diagnoses, or under treatment  for the thyroid gland, the patient can continue the medication dosage as usual, unless the doctor suggests otherwise.
